Voyager 1: A Journey Beyond Our Solar System

Exploring the Outer Reaches

On September 5, 1977, Voyager 1 launched from NASA's Kennedy Space Center, marking the start of an extraordinary journey that would take it to the outer limits of our solar system and beyond.

The twin Voyager spacecraft, Voyager 1 and Voyager 2, were designed to explore the outer planets of our solar system. Voyager 1 was the first to reach Jupiter in 1979, followed by Voyager 2 in 1981. Both spacecraft continued their journey, reaching Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune before venturing into interstellar space.

Beyond the Planets

In 2012, Voyager 1 became the first human-made object to enter interstellar space, the vast region beyond the boundary of our solar system. It continues to explore the interstellar medium, providing valuable insights into the conditions outside our solar system.

Along the way, Voyager 1 made several groundbreaking discoveries, including a thin ring around Jupiter and two new moons orbiting the planet. The spacecraft has also collected a wealth of data on the outer planets, their moons, and the interstellar medium.

A Legacy in Space

The Voyager spacecraft have been exploring space for over four decades, providing us with an unprecedented understanding of our solar system and the interstellar beyond. Their legacy will continue to inspire generations of scientists and engineers to explore the unknown and push the boundaries of human knowledge.
